The Words I've Always Wanted to Say | Personal | #gettoknowelovephotos

I squirmed in my seat waiting for my time to speak. We were participating in a mastermind group and I was surrounded by incredible women who spoke so eloquently about their businesses and dreams.  I was nervous and my palms were sweating.  Then it was my turn. I casually spit out a few generic things about feeling like my website and online presence didn’t represent who I was. And then the bomb hit when someone called me out in the very best kind of way.  She said, “Emily, you don’t know who you are because you don’t know what you want.  What do you want!?” I sat there for a moment just trying to process what she had said and I realized that I wasn’t being open. I knew exactly who I was and what I wanted, but I was afraid. So I fumbled on my words for a few more seconds and then burst into tears……

Life Lessons From a Sunflower | Personal | #gettoknowelovephotos

For the last few weeks I’ve struggled.  I’ve struggled to find balance in the chaotic beautiful mess called life and motherhood.  I have felt overwhelmed physically, emotionally and spiritually.    It’s so easy to get caught up in a fast paced lifestyle where you’re trying to keep up with everyone and everything around you.  I pray daily for balance and strength.   And although I don’t always receive an answer right away—I eventually do :)

Tonight, as I was driving home I passed a field of sunflowers.  As I saw the setting sun glowing over them, I had a moment of peace.

I realized there is a lot I can learn from a sunflower:

1.  Dreams are like Sunflowers
Like dreams, sunflowers start from a tiny seed (idea) and through growth over time they turn into something magnificent.

2.  It’s important to always be seeking after light.
Scientifically, sunflowers follow the sun.   By focusing on the brightness of the sun, the sunflower continues to grow, develop and become beautifully strong.     This reminds me that it’s important to be positive and to seek after happiness rather than negativity.

3.  Stand tall and never stop looking for the sunshine
I know I’m going to have tough days, but it’s important to keep trying to be better and never give up.

“I want to be like a sunflower; so even on the darkest days I will stand tall and find the sunlight.”

“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows.  It’s what the sunflowers do.”
-Helen Keller

Tomorrow is a new day.

Crank up that radio….

roll down the windows when you’re driving….

laugh more…..

play more….

work harder….

and know that you are meant to be a bright, beautiful and happy!

Everyone has a travel bucket list, right?  Well, it’s more like a dream list….but I’m throwing it out there since it’s my 10th wedding anniversary this year and I’m sure my husband is reading this.  (Hi Justin! haha)

My Current Top 5 Dream Travel List

maldives

1.  Maldives

This has always been on the top of my list!  One of those over the water bungalows with a glass floor?  Amazing!   I’m so there!
Google Quick Facts:
The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 coral atolls, which are made up of hundreds of islands. It’s known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs.

hawaii

It’s Hawaii……enough said!   I’ve never been and hopefully will have the opportunity soon!  :)
Google Quick Facts:
Hawaii, a U.S. state, is an isolated volcanic archipelago in the Central Pacific. Its islands are renowned for their rugged landscapes of cliffs, waterfalls, tropical foliage and beaches with gold, red, black and even green sands.

3.  Palenque in Mexico (Ancient Ruins)

I’ve always been fascinated by these ruins and would love to explore them and climb to the top!  I love old graveyards and historic pieces of architecture so these ruins would be so incredible to visit!
Google Quick Facts:
Palenque, also anciently known as Lakamha, was a Maya city state in southern Mexico that flourished in the 7th century. The Palenque ruins date from ca. 226 BC to ca. AD 799.

4.  Sequoia National Park

These are just unreal.  The size of them in pictures just blows me away.  I can only imagine what it would be like to see them in person.
Google Quick Facts:
Sequoia National Park is a national park in the southern Sierra Nevada east of Visalia, California, in the United States. It was established on September 25, 1890. The park spans 404,064 acres.

5.  The Bachelor Mansion

Ok so this is sort of ridicuous, but if you know me, I’m all about The Bachelor/Bachelorette series!   They’ve gotta have some kind of tour or something! haha.    Ok, I’ll settle for a Hollywood home tour!  ;)

Where is my Photographer Friend? | Personal

Virginia Beach Wedding Photographer

I'm sitting here contemplating if I should even post this?   But....you never know who is reading this and might be feeling the same way.   Another photographer might be reading this and think, "Wow, I feel exactly the same way."  And even more so, they might get some kind of validation that they aren't the only ones who feel like this.

Do you ever feel like everyone around you is so "Put Together" and have the most amazing FRIENDS and LIFE?   Even when they are posting their "look at my messy house" pictures do you find yourself thinking that your world is still way more chaotic than theirs?  (Side note:  I probably should be doing laundry instead of writing this right now......or cleaning the toilet.......or filing that stack of paper on the dresser.....)  We live in a world of constant social media in our face, its easy to feel overwhelmed, insecure and LONELY!  At least I do anyways.

I'm not a good writer.  My high school English teacher made that very clear with her rude comments on my papers.  (She will remain anonymous even though she has retired and isn't torturing teenagers anymore--haha!)   When it comes to blogging I struggle with knowing what to write.  I know that I should be doing it on a consistent basis, but it's TOUGH!   Dang it, I'm already off topic.....

Back to what I am seeing on social media.  I see all of these people with, what appears to be, these amazing friendships and photographer buddies.  Swapping head shots, 2nd shooting for each other, having playdates, etc.  I WANT THAT.  I know I have to work at those types of relationships.....but I want that.  Aside from my husband, I literally find myself yearning for a type of friendship that is lasting, meaningful and open.  The kind of friendship where the person just "gets YOU" and you don't have to put any guards up.  We've moved around a lot in our 9 years of marriage (no, we aren't military) and I have found it difficult to build those strong relationships every time we live in a new place.  I usually struggle with maintaining long distant friendships for oodles of reasons.  I've also come to realize that I've got trust issues!  haha! (Maybe I really shouldn't laugh about that, but perhaps putting it out to the universe will help me overcome them!)  I find myself being more introverted until I get to know someone well.  But if you look at that picture above you can plainly see that I am a total goofball.   I love to laugh and make jokes.  Not very many people get to see that side of me because I tend to stay at home WAY TO MUCH and I'm not an initiator.  And by that I mean, I am not the one to usually make plans with others.  That is why I usually gravitate towards those who like to take charge! haha :)  Now I just sound like I'm rambling.  Basically, I am looking to break out of my shell.  I'm looking to forge new friendships in the photography community!

Now that I've re-read this it sounds like I'm putting out applications for a friend. hahahahaha!   But....if you're reading this and you are a photographer and need a friend.....  Oh gosh this is just awkward now.  If you've made it this far BLESS YOUR HEART.   I promise I'm not weird, I just need someone to hang with and take pretty pictures with.  Are you interested? hahahaha  Ok, I'm done!

Drop Dead Diva | #gettoknowelovephotos

I'm starting a new blog series called "Get to Know elovephotos."  It will most likely be on Fridays and will share random things about me.  You can find me on Instagram (@elovephotos) where I will be hash-tagging #gettoknowelovephotos  post occasionally.
You're probably thinking that's a really awkward hashtag, but it works and I'm sticking with it! ;)

So today I'm talking about Drop Dead Diva.   It's a show I found on Netflix and I love it. I have always loved all things pop culture, so the main characte Jane is just hilarious. She's the perfect combination of an intelligent woman with a ditzy side.   Also, it has a variety of celebrity appearances and hilarious plots.  I'm not going to go into what it's about, you'll just have to check it out!  Disclaimer:  I will not be held accountable if you get addicted.  I also will not be held accountable if you think it's stupid. haha!

What are your favorite shows?
